First inspired by a piece of chain from our local sawmill, the segmented piece of chain reminded me of a scorpion or dragonfly tail section. From there the project progressed when I found a pair of old hedge trimmers that were suited perfectly for pincher's. Out of this the scorpion was born. The final touch was when Mike Hopko, of Soul Glass, created a custom hand blown glass stinger colored in red, green and clear. In Mesopotamia, Gilgamesh for example approaches mountains where scorpion folk guard the entrance. Additionally, the Akkadians called the constellation Scorpio, Girtab, meaning the Seizer, or Stinger and "Place Where One Bows Down". In Egyptian mythology, the scorpion stands for Set, the Trickster and brother of Nephthys, nemesis and opponent of Osiris, and Isis. The Falaknuma palace of Hyderabad, India, is laid out in the shape of a scorpion with two stingers spreading out as wings to the north. As you can see, scorpion's hold an appeal to a very wide range of people. Weighing in at 100 lbs and 4x4x5 feet in dimensions this piece of hand crafted art is impressive.
